Technical Information: Build a Website

Here's all the technical information that you need to make the most of your visit to Build a Website.

Additional Programming: JavaScript™

JavaScript has become one of the most popular programming languages on the web. This website uses JavaScript to provide improved navigational facilities and to enhance our visitors' experience.

You may refuse the use of JavaScript by selecting the appropriate settings on your browser, but please be aware that if you do so you will not be able to use many of the facilities offered by this website.

Browser Versions

Unfortunately we can't check every page in all of the many different browsers that are used for surfing the internet, although we believe that everything should work satisfactorily in those that are most commonly used by our visitors. We have tested everything (we hope) in Internet Explorer 8.0, Firefox 12.0, and Google Chrome 18.0 or later versions, but if you should encounter problems using these or any other browser, please don't hesitate to let us know by using our Technical Help Form.

You should expect minor variations in appearance, facilities available and performance depending on which browser you are using. For example, you may find that Internet Explorer offers a slightly better display quality, whereas facilities requiring additional programming may run slightly faster in Firefox or Google Chrome. This situation may change as new browser versions are released.

We wouldn't recommend that you use Internet Explorer 7.0 or earlier versions.

Browser Windows: Links to This and Other Sites

Links from this site to other sites will open in a new browser window. Although most of the links to pages on this website will open in the same window, a small number will open in a new, smaller, window.

By selecting the appropriate browser settings you may choose to open those links that would normally open in a new window in a new tab in your current browser window. However, this should not affect those pages on this site which open in a smaller window.

Cookies and Web Beacons

Cookies are small text files placed on your computer's hard drive, and web beacons, sometimes described as clear GIFs or pixel tags, are small strings of HTML code placed on a web page.

Cookies are a way of passing information from one web page to another, and are used by this website for navigational purposes, to enhance our visitors' experience, and to help us to analyse how they use this website. The information that we store in these cookies will not allow us to identify you personally.

You may refuse the use of cookies by choosing the appropriate browser settings. Even if you do decide to allow cookies in your browser, you may still refuse some or all of those used by this website. Please note that if you do this you may not be able to make use of all of its facilities.

You don't appear to have cookies enabled. Perhaps you haven't yet accepted our cookies, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

Please see our Cookie and Privacy Policies for more information about how we use cookies on this site.

Monitor Resolution

This website is designed to be viewable without horizontal scrolling when using monitor resolutions from 1024 x 768 pixels upwards. It's best viewed at a screen width of between 1024 and 1300 pixels, depending on your monitor's display format.

We believe that a screen width of over 1600 pixels may cause difficulties in reading unless you have good eyesight or a very large monitor.
